REPORTS TO: Principal, Community Building



This management-level role will work closely with existing teams and company leadership in order to develop campaigns for our clients as well as create more opportunities for our agency to consistently deliver higher quality and more fun client work.

This Public Relations & Advertising Director will have a vision for leveraging public relations and advertising (AKA email, website content, social media, influencer marketing, partnership marketing, messaging and more) to build passionate, connected communities and drive social impact. This person will be a self-starter and someone who’s creative, organized, motivated by data, and interested in the overall digital marketing strategy down to the planning, implementation, and follow up to storyline pitches. This candidate will love systems and organizing projects, to-dos and teams through project management systems like Asana.



Strong Management (50%)

  • Secure one warm lead for new business each month using the six step sequence outlined in the new business tracking sheet 
  • Grow current revenue streams for the media relations department by at least 10% each year. 
  • Lead company in financial, operational and human capital conversations as part of the management team
  • Managing agency budgets and setting outreach and growth goals for the department to ensure it maintains profitability
  • Support in developing company-wide systems to more effectively manage PR and social media-related work. This includes:
    • scheduling and leading a bimonthly “how to” education session for the PR team 
    • rolling out a full implementation of Muck Rack 
    • turning around high-quality content at an agency pace to seize media opportunities across clients
  • Define and develop measurement models for project success with clients
  • Mentor and educate all agency staff on public relations and communications through regular department meetings, knowledge sharing at staff meetings, development of secret sauce documents and one-on-one mentoring
  • Manage 2-4 employees by holding them accountable to their tasks and projects, perform regular performance check ins, work with HR to deliver follow up memos and disciplinary letters 
  • Work with other managers to create an employee-centric culture offering career goals, action plans, consistent skill development and collaboration while living and working in several different states
  • Develop the strategy for the PR department, ranging from ongoing professional development needs of the team members and their long-term skill building to the manner in which client accounts are serviced

Creative Work (50%)

  • Regularly manage 3 – 4 accounts to develop long-term relationships with clients who renew contracts year-over-year while also mentoring the team to lead their own accounts, and, ultimately, being accountable for the client results 
  • Oversee the development of media relations and advertising strategies and campaigns for all clients
  • Analyze results each month for all media relations clients and look for through lines in client work
  • Read news and find opportunities for the team and clients to take advantage of current events
  • Writing, writing and writing – and loving it
  • Push teams to think bigger and more creatively about the work they are producing for clients
  • Mentor teams to develop media relationships in targeted markets and nationally and lead opportunities to grow agency-wide connections
  • Understand how to tailor digital media campaigns for specific audiences and goals and the ability to communicate that with both the Mixte team and clients in a way that gets them excited about the possibilities and encourages them to have fun
  • Close the knowledge gap between our PR department and our digital department through collaboration with the digital director to ensure our collective teams are firing on all cylinders
  • Create relationships with Hispanic media in the US and Mexico, primarily in San Diego County and Baja California, and be responsible for Hispanic marketing strategies
  • Identify opportunities to offer additional services to existing clients.



  • We want to find the right person, so we’ll consider people with:
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in paid social and digital advertising
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or
  • On-the-job experience or education related to digital marketing, or
  • Any interesting combination of the above three bullets
  • Being a pro at media relations strategies and connecting those to digital platforms
  • Ability to project manage in a virtual project management software (like Basecamp)
  • Highly creative with excellent analytical abilities


  • Relationships within or knowledge of or experience in social justice communities  
  • Project management experience in Basecamp or similar virtual planning tool
  • An appetite for finding technological solutions to day-to-day challenges so we can all work smarter, not harder
  • Fluent in English and also Spanish, Arabic or Vietnamese


  • $75,000 – $90,000 + commissions + benefits
