Why did you choose to “Go Mixte?”: In January 2019, I started working with Mixte as a freelance graphic designer before officially joining the team. At the time, I was finishing my last year of college and getting ready to move back home to San Diego. My creative experiences for the most part have taken place in Davis, and it was rewarding to get to collaborate with a team so involved in my home.
I love the challenge of creating visual ways to share a message, and I admire that Mixte is working towards amplifying those important messages from our community.
“Storytelling” has been such a buzzword in the creative field for the past several years, and I think everyone has their own interpretations of it. Sometimes I like to joke that graphic designers pretend to be storytellers when in reality we just spend most of our days making flyers. But most other times, I let myself see the bigger picture. The idea that different creative strategies and pieces can all come together to share stories and advocate for our communities is so exciting to me.
It’s never lost on me how much of a learning process everything is. Creatives can play a huge role in both breaking and perpetuating certain social narratives. It’s something I’m learning how to navigate as a designer and I’m looking forward to that journey with Mixte.
