Introduction
In a state where low-income Californians of color are heavily impacted by the toll of pollution, the Environmental Health Coalition works to ensure everyone across San Diego, Tijuana and other Californian communities has a clean and safe environment to live, work and play.
In 2024, the Environmental Health Coalition’s leadership team was undergoing major transitions, including medical leave for their Executive Director and head of Marketing, in the midst of election season. To ensure that the team was able to focus their energies on campaigning and rallying voters on vital issues such as Measure G, which would have increased funding for public transportation throughout San Diego County, we led their communications efforts, which included media relations, social media management and the publication of their monthly newsletter, the ToxInformer.
Our Objectives
- Collaborate with the team on communications tools, including social media templates and editorial calendars, to streamline their work
- Raise awareness of ongoing campaigns through pitching stories, securing op-eds and social media campaigns
- Support transition of leadership team through supporting the Environmental Health Coalition’s communications
The Outcome
We ended our time with the Environmental Health Coalition with a team better prepared to lead their communications, from their newsletter to media outreach. This included publishing op-eds in the San Diego Downtown News and the Times of San Diego and securing stories in local media including Fox5/KUSI.
While Measure G ultimately did not pass, the decision was close: increased awareness of the measure brought many more supporters on board.
