Introduction
Where does the money we use for healthcare come from, where does it go and how does it benefit our communities?
The California Pan-Ethnic Health Network (CPEHN) brings together and mobilizes communities of color to advocate for public policies that advance health equity and improve health outcomes across California. The organization wanted to reach people most impacted by health inequities to demystify the healthcare system and brought Mixte in as its communications partner for the multi-year campaign.
Our Objectives
Mixte worked with CPEHN to create a campaign that engages Californians in understanding how the healthcare system operates and in turn, where to advocate for better policies that will improve health outcomes for our communities.
As we set out, our focus was on three things:
- Illuminate the system: Break down the financial structure of healthcare and explain how money moves through the system, making something typically full of jargon feel easily understandable
- Engage historically marginalized communities: Reach consumers most affected by health inequities and provide them with the knowledge and tools to advocate for better healthcare policies.
- Build a strong foundation for action: Mobilize these communities to join the movement for healthcare reform by engaging in advocacy efforts and demanding a system that serves their needs.
The Outcome
So far Mixte and CPEHN have laid the foundation for a strong campaign, including:
- Ingesting hours of working group sessions, met with advisory groups and gathered resources that informed the campaign’s direction which led to the development of the campaign’s name and visual identity.
- Designing a creative branding campaign that integrates the theme of illuminating and educating about healthcare costs. The campaign incorporates CPEHN’s sunshine logo and reflects the concept of “shedding light” on how health care is financed through cohesive visuals that emphasize clarity and transparency.
- Creating prototypes for a collection of multilingual, community-oriented education and engagement learning modules that easily explain health care financing, health inequities, health care delivery system and payment reform. The collection includes:
- A landing page that ties the campaign together with cohesive branding, a tagline, and messaging.
- An introductory video that explains the purpose of the campaign and introduces a cast of characters that will guide viewers as they learn more about healthcare financing.
- A graphic ‘zine designed to simplify complex topics in an engaging and accessible format.
- An interactive quiz-based website to educate users while making learning enjoyable.
These methods were chosen to resonate with the diverse audiences that are impacted by health care funding inequities.
- Creating detail-oriented timelines and systems to aid in the success of the project including an efficient process for review of each learning module and production as well as best practices for testing.
