Introduction
Sojourners is a national Christian organization committed to mobilizing people of faith for social justice, inspiring hope and building a movement to transform individuals, communities, the church and the world.
In 2020, we partnered with Sojourners and their coalition: Lawyers and Collars, to activate voters in 10 key battleground states just as COVID and misinformation threatened to deny millions of people their right to democratic representation.
In 2024, we joined forces once again, this time with Sojourner’s new coalition: Faiths United to Save Democracy, a joint effort between faith leaders in battleground states who were committed to protecting voters at the polls and beyond by:
- Sending poll chaplains to keep the piece at polling sites
- Addressing misinformation about voting and elections
Our Objectives
- Recruiting faith leaders as volunteer media spokespeople to address voter suppression in Black communities.
- Equipping them with the information needed to encourage their communities to vote and educate them on how to prepare to do so safely in the middle of the pandemic.
- Combatting poll intimidation by informing community members of their voting rights.
- Mitigating inaccessibility to voting polls – including various closures of polling places in low-income and Black communities.
- Developing social media toolkits and messaging that allows the coalition to rapidly respond to election-related news and concerns about voting access in their communities
The Outcome
While our work around the 2024 election is still ongoing, we’re already building relationships with media in key battleground states, including Georgia, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Wisconsin.
