Introduction
The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is an organization committed to identifying the most effective policies and programs for fighting inequity and poverty. J-PAL North America, based out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, does critical work to promote diversity, equity and inclusion among its staff, researcher network and partners.
J-PAL reached out to Mixte for support in building a communications strategy to share authentic and compelling stories about our organization’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work.
Our Objectives
Mixte was tasked with providing a comprehensive report and strategic recommendations on how J-PAL North America could communicate its internal DEI work to its primary audiences – specifically in-network researchers, current and prospective staff and donors.
To reach that goal, we hosted group interviews, gathered information and conducted thorough research of best practices communicating organizational DEI initiatives. We then analyzed the results and used our deep well of communications experience to create an intentional strategic plan to support this effort.
The Outcome
We provided J-PAL North America with a comprehensive analysis, strategic recommendations and a suite of both immediate and long-term tactics so that it could effectively communicate the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in economics. The report included an analysis of the organization’s current communications efforts, strategies showcasing diverse employee voices and tactics like a digital video series and a custom dashboard to measure DEI progress consistently over time.
