Introduction
For decades, The San Diego LGBT Community Center has been a place where San Diegans who identify as LGBTQ+ have long found refuge, affirmation and critical resources, from health care to housing.
As The Center marked its 50th anniversary and looked towards their end of year giving campaign, the team recognized the importance of not merely recounting the organization’s people, history and growth, but to build the support necessary to sustain their work through the next 50 years.
That’s where Mixte came in. We saw an opportunity to not just share positive stories about The Center’s history and work, but more importantly to build The Center’s capacity to tell its own affirmative story over the coming years.
Our Objectives
Grow The Center’s reputation as a champion for equality, equity and justice by:
- Building capacity to respond proactively to media opportunities
- Attracting fresh supporters to champion its mission
- Rebuilding trust among community members
Here’s how we did it:
- Pitched stories of events and major milestones, including The Center’s 50th anniversary, across influential local and California-based media
- Developed a comprehensive PR plan that provided strategic guidance on how to boost The Center’s capacity to proactively raise awareness and respond to new media opportunities
- Elevated The Center’s leadership through opinion pieces
The Outcome
Through our time working together, we expanded awareness of The Center to new audiences through local media outreach, securing placements in outlets like the San Diego Union-Tribune, Fox 5 and the Los Angeles Blade. Through our strategic guidance and the formulation of a comprehensive PR plan, we equipped The Center with a clear and actionable strategy to elevate their communications to the next level. This involved enhancing media outreach and training a new cohort of spokespeople to effectively convey their compelling story.
