Introduction

The past couple years have seen a tsunami of transphobic legislation: bills that banned trans and non-binary people (especially youth) from accessing essential healthcare, using restrooms, playing on sports teams, or even changing formal identity documentation to reflect who they are.

Keeping up with all these bills and policymakers who pass them nationwide? Overwhelming. That’s exactly where the Trans Formation Project stepped in.

Its volunteer team of researchers, legal experts and data analysts track every trans-related bill that elected officials introduce from coast to coast. With the sheer volume of anti-trans bills being put forward each month, a key part of TFP’s work is distinguishing which bills are just hateful noise and unlikely to pass or if a bill could have a real impact on the rights and wellbeing of trans people and their families. Every bill is analyzed and then the team’s findings are issued in a weekly newsletter that gives you the context you need to take action or prepare yourselves and your loved ones.

We knew raising awareness of this team’s vital work would help more people use them as a resource and build support for its critical legislation tracking tools. Media coverage about their work had previously been limited to just trans-focused recognition days, rather than how their work is changing lives.

Our Objectives

  • Raise awareness of TFP and its research and analysis of transphobic legislation and policymakers
  • Secure at least one feature media placement in a major news outlet outside of trans-focused recognition days
  • Introduce TFP to new audiences

The Outcome

Our time together coincided with the 2024 election and the beginning of the new federal administration. We worked with Trans Formations Project to rapidly respond to these and other key recognitions, such as Trans Day of Remembrance, through media pitching and through issuing statements. This resulted in multiple placements in media outlets across the country, centering the organization’s powerful voice in calling for true trans and non-binary justice and equality.
