As Trust Erodes, Broaden Your Media Horizons

Collage about trust in media
Wait, what’s happening?

In the U.S., the go-to outlets for national political news are getting harder to trust. It’s time to broaden our horizons.

On one hand, major outlets are bending the knee to the Trump administration; on the other, they’re blacklisted or face defunding if the administration sees them as a threat. Regardless, they’re all losing relevance, as the administration openly shuns mainstream media in favor of cronies on social media and fringe news platforms.

Why does it matter?

While mainstream media has never been fully trustworthy — the New York Times’ biased coverage of Palestine and trans people is just one example — what we’re seeing now is certainly an escalation. It’s especially concerning for social justice communicators like us, because our missions challenge the warped view of reality that the administration demands.

What does Mixte recommend?

Fortunately, there is no shortage of reputable international outlets covering U.S. politics. Right now, other countries may be more objective. Our PR strategists offer a selection of favorites to follow and collaborate with.

Al Jazeera

“I’ve always found that international newspapers offer a respite from our polarized media landscape. There is so much depth and nuance behind America’s top stories that we don’t always get in our home country. One example is Al Jazeera that offers new insights into news coverage about Middle Eastern affairs and also global issues that can help Western audiences get a more rounded understanding of current events. It’s great that many of the world’s top newspapers are printed in English or have English translations available so we can avoid the sensationalized, emotional presentation of American news stories.”

– Brad Weaver

Gatopardo

“Gatopardo feels similar to The Atlantic, with explainers, investigative-like features that contextualize the present moment. I love their weekly podcast more than anything, Semanario Gatopardo. They had a great episode contextualizing political reasons for naming or renaming geographic areas (like the Gulf of Mexico.)”

– Arturo Garcia Sierra

The Guardian

“The Guardian is one of the few outlets providing in-depth, uncompromising reporting about the Trump administration. Government support for them is limited so they’re able to speak with a more independent voice and they constantly break major, international stories. The classic example? Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing, back when Glen Greenwald wrote for them.”

No matter where you reside, looking beyond your borders can always be informative. Byron continues, “Everyone should follow at least one or two international outlets that cover their own country. If a lot of your country’s media is billionaire-owned, state-supported and/or partisan (cough cough, the U.S.), are you really getting the full picture?”
